One of our Tobacco Control Unit team, Beladenta Amalia, participated in The 50th Union World Conference on Lung Health in Hyderabad, India which was held from 30th Oct until 2nd Nov 2019. The Conference offered a cutting-edge scientific showcase and community programme in the field of of tuberculosis, tobacco control, and other lung-related issues to researchers, policy-makers, advocates, and civil societies from around the world. Bela presented her work on regulation of vape-free policies in 48 WHO European Region countries (RASHA-E project) which was conducted last year.
The conference was inaugurated by The Honourable Vice-President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah, on the first day. Besides in oral and poster sessions, tobacco control saw substantial attention in a special World Health Organization session titled ‘Novel and emerging nicotine and tobacco products’, where a panel of experts discussed the threat posed by e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products on global public health. Many participants were also signed The Union’s Tobacco-free pledge during the conference; showing their commitment to strengthen the implementation of strong tobacco control policies. Next year, The 51st Union World Conference on Lung Health will take place in Sevilla, Spain.
