Impact of Spanish legislation on tobacco consumption and passive exposure<\/h3><\/div>

There are few assessments of the impact of tobacco control measures at the population level. In our country, only two studies, one carried out nationwide and another in the Community of Madrid, have so far evaluated the impact of tobacco control measures at the population level using a telephone survey. Our research group launched a project (dCOT2 study) with this same design (two cross-sectional surveys, one before and one after the law, project funded by the Carlos III Health Institute, PI081436) in order to obtain not only the prevalence of perceived exposure to HAT but also to have a measurement of exposure using a biological marker such as cotinine in saliva that we had already used in a previous study (PI020981).

Well before Law 28\/2005, we designed the first study mentioned above (PI020981) to determine the prevalence and levels of exposure of the general population to FAT. This study has provided abundant information on population exposure to FAT, such as that 75% of the non-smoking adult population of the city of Barcelona perceives being exposed to FAT either at home, at work or at school, during free time and while using public or private transport. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

To evaluate the impact of Spanish tobacco control legislation (Laws 28\/2005 and 42\/2010) on smoking (changes in consumption, dependence, motivation to quit and abandonment) in smokers from a population-based cohort (through a survey and biomarkers).
To evaluate the impact of Spanish tobacco control legislation (Laws 28\/2005 and 42\/2010) on exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (self-reported and according to salivary cotinine levels) in non-smokers in a population-based cohort.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Design: Cohort study. Subjects.<\/em> Cohort formed in 2004-2005 from a representative sample of the adult population (+16 years) of the city of Barcelona (1245 participants with baseline information). Dependent variables.<\/em> Tobacco consumption and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke obtained through questionnaire and cotinine concentrations and other biomarkers. Independent variables.<\/em> Sociodemographic variables, general health status, physical activity and alcohol consumption, obtained through a questionnaire.<\/p><\/div><\/div>
