To analyze the prevalence of tobacco consumption among patients admitted to Catalan hospitals and describe the determinants and consumption pattern of smokers, in addition to describing the level of implementation of smoking cessation interventions in hospitals according to the model proposed by the WHO of the 5As.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Multicenter cross-sectional prevalence study.

Scope of the study<\/strong> :
Public hospitals that are members of the Catalan Network of Smoke-Free Hospitals.

Study subjects<\/strong> :
Representative sample of adults (\u226518 years old) admitted to Catalan public hospitals in 2014 calculated taking into account an expected prevalence of 35% and a confidence level \u03b1=0.05 and a precision of +\/-3% (0.03) (n=1,888).

Variables and data collection<\/strong> :
Structured personal interview using a questionnaire with an interviewer on sociodemographic information, tobacco consumption profile before admission (non-smoker, ex-smoker, occasional or daily smoker) and during admission (active smoker, abstinent). All smokers will be asked about their tobacco consumption pattern (number of cigarettes per day, Fagerstr\u00f6m Test, etc.) and their exhaled carbon monoxide will be measured to validate their abstinence.

Data analysis<\/strong> :
The prevalence of general tobacco use and by independent variables will be calculated. The relationship between these variables and smoking will be calculated using multivariate logistic regression. The frequency of smoking cessation intervention by type of hospital will also be estimated and how patients’ abstinence during hospitalization is related to the centers using multilevel analysis models.
