Evaluation of Law 28\/2005 on tobacco control in the hospitality industry<\/h3><\/div>

Evaluation of the impact of the new \u201cLaw Regulating the Sale, Supply, Consumption and Advertising of Tobacco Products\u201d on levels of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke: subproject on salivary cotinine levels in restaurant workers

Ireland pioneered the introduction of measures restricting tobacco use in workplaces, including restaurants and pubs, in March 2004. Evaluations of compliance with the law in the first year of its implementation were positive, with significant decreases in concentrations of ultrafine particles, CO and benzene in pubs and significant improvements in the lung function of waiters. In Spain, the \u201claw regulating the sale, supply, consumption and advertising of tobacco products\u201d (Bill 121\/000036) was implemented in 2006. This new law banned smoking in workplaces, including the catering and hospitality sector, as had already been successfully implemented in other European countries. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/path><\/svg>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\tObjectives<\/strong><\/span><\/div>

Determine levels of exposure to tobacco smoke through a questionnaire and measurement of cotinine concentration in saliva of non-smoking workers before and after the law came into force (in the short, medium and long term).

\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/path><\/svg>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\tMethods<\/strong><\/span><\/div>

Prospective cohort study. The cohort was formed by a convenience sample of smoking and non-smoking restaurant workers in 5 Autonomous Communities (n=431 in total). These participants, identified before the law, were contacted at 4 different times: before the law and at 4 months, 16 months and 24 months after the law came into force. Active tobacco consumption, passive exposure and attitudes and beliefs towards the law by the workers were determined by interview with questionnaire, and saliva was collected to determine the cotinine concentration by capillary gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. <\/p><\/div><\/div>
