Efficacy of an integrated brief intervention on tobacco and alcohol consumption via the quitline 061 Salut Respon: A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT)<\/h3><\/div>

Tobacco and alcohol are two of the most widely consumed addictive substances and contribute significantly to a high burden of disease and premature mortality. Their combined use increases risks and particularly affects people in socioeconomically vulnerable situations. Despite the support of the WHO, integrated interventions for the combined use of tobacco and alcohol are scarce at the population level and are usually addressed for each substance separately, which limits their effectiveness. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/path><\/svg>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\tObjectives<\/strong><\/span><\/div>

General Objective:<\/strong> To evaluate the effectiveness of a brief integrated intervention to eliminate tobacco use and reduce alcohol consumption, aimed at individuals contacting 061 Salut Respon for non-urgent reasons.

Secondary Objectives:<\/strong>

O1:<\/strong> To evaluate the effectiveness of the integrated intervention in terms of abstinence and reduction of tobacco and alcohol consumption compared to exclusive intervention groups, taking into account participants\u2019 sociodemographic characteristics and initial consumption patterns.

O2:<\/strong> To examine the evolution of readiness to change regarding quitting or reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption among participants in the integrated intervention compared to the exclusive intervention groups.

O3:<\/strong> To analyze differences in alcohol consumption, including frequency and binge-drinking patterns, among participants in the integrated intervention and the exclusive intervention groups.

O4:<\/strong> To assess nicotine dependence and the use of tobacco products among participants in the integrated intervention compared to the exclusive intervention groups.

O5:<\/strong> To analyze implementation outcomes of the integrated intervention, identifying its reach, fidelity, and maintenance within 061 Salut Respon, as well as exploring satisfaction and recommendations for sustaining the intervention among both participants and the 061 team.

\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/path><\/svg>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\tMethods<\/strong><\/span><\/div>

This study is based on a randomized controlled trial using mixed methods, aimed at evaluating both the effectiveness of the intervention and its implementation in clinical practice.

The project is conducted in three phases:
<\/strong>
Phase I (co-design):<\/strong> Participatory design of the integrated intervention with 061 professionals, clinical staff, and researchers, adjusting it to the functioning of the service and developing a support application.

Phase II (Randomized Controlled Trial):<\/strong> Adults contacting 061 for non-urgent reasons who consume tobacco and alcohol at low or moderate risk are randomly assigned to three groups: integrated tobacco-alcohol intervention, tobacco-only intervention, or alcohol-only intervention. All groups receive six structured calls over six months.

Phase III (implementation):<\/strong> Evaluation of reach, fidelity, maintenance, and satisfaction through questionnaires and focus groups with participants and 061 professionals, using both quantitative and qualitative analysis.<\/p><\/div><\/div>
