{"id":14723,"date":"2025-11-10T09:06:47","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T08:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/icoprevencio.cat\/uct\/study-reveals-tobacco-industry-interference-in-spains-public-health-policy\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T09:06:47","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T08:06:47","slug":"study-reveals-tobacco-industry-interference-in-spains-public-health-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icoprevencio.cat\/uct\/en\/study-reveals-tobacco-industry-interference-in-spains-public-health-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Study Reveals Tobacco Industry Interference in Spain\u2019s Public Health Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The tobacco industry actively interfered in the development and implementation of key public health policies for tobacco control in Spain between 2023 and 2024. <\/strong>This is the main conclusion of a <a href=\"https:\/\/tobaccocontrol.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2025\/11\/03\/tc-2025-059495\">study <\/a>led by researchers from the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), recently published in the scientific journal <em>Tobacco Control<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p>According to the research, the tobacco industry used its official position within Spain\u2019s Advisory Committee of the Tobacco Market Commission (CMT) to <strong>obstruct and delay public health measures aimed at reducing tobacco consumption,<\/strong> such as the introduction of plain packaging.<\/p>\n\n<p>The study is based on the analysis of <strong>22 official minutes<\/strong> from meetings of the Advisory Committee, from which 29 statements were selected. These describe a <strong>systematic pattern of political interference strategies by the tobacco industry<\/strong>. The most common tactics were obstruction and delay in implementing key measures, such as plain packaging, identified in 14 statements. <\/p>\n\n<p>On seven occasions, the industry attempted to manage information unfavorable to its interests, while in five interventions it claimed its right to participate in political debates as a strategy to maintain its influence. The study also identified <strong>two veiled threats of legal action against regulations<\/strong> that could harm its commercial interests. <\/p>\n\n<p>The authors of the study conclude that the tobacco industry <strong>\u201cexploited its institutionalized role, acting as a Trojan horse\u201d <\/strong>to prioritize its commercial interests over public health. They warn that this position, protected by Spanish legislation, \u201copens a clear channel for interference\u201d and directly contravenes Spain\u2019s obligations under Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). <\/p>\n\n<p>In this regard, the researchers call for urgent reforms to protect public health policies from the interests of the tobacco industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The tobacco industry actively interfered in the development and implementation of key public health policies for tobacco control in Spain between 2023 and 2024.
