The Tobacco Control Unit team attended the Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco (SRNT) Annual Meeting once again, held March 12-15 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The SRNT Annual Meeting is an excellent platform for professionals dedicated to nicotine and tobacco research, providing opportunities to share findings, foster collaborations, and make new connections.
Cristina MartĂnez , head of the unit, presented the participatory research within the GAM-CAT project , which consists of the development and piloting of a gamified mobile application to monitor patterns of simultaneous cannabis and tobacco consumption among people seeking professional help from Catalan addiction services. This work aims to better characterize patterns of use and provide personalized support to help dual users quit both substances.
On the other hand, Olena Tigova presented the results of the Smoke-Free Homes project. The pilot intervention study conducted in Barcelona showed promising results, with 68% of participants attempting to establish a smoke-free home and 17% successfully maintaining one two weeks after the intervention. A larger trial is currently underway in Catalonia to evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of the intervention.
In addition to the conference, on March 10, UCT researchers visited UTHealth Houston , one of the leading research centers in public health and implementation science. This visit aimed to further strengthen the collaboration between the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the University of Barcelona and the UTHealth School of Public Health and the Institute of Implementation Science.
