Online training program to improve smoking cessation interventions in Spain
The prevalence of tobacco use in Spain is high (23.0% of the Spanish population > 16 years old is a smoker, 27.6% of men and 18.6% of women). However, smoking cessation interventions in health services are scarce.
This implementation project aims to offer an online learning program to improve the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of healthcare professionals in quitting tobacco use and increase the number and quality of smoking cessation interventions in clinical settings.
The E~PISCIS project is an online training program to train healthcare professionals on how to identify, treat and support patients who smoke. This project uses two evidence-based products that have been developed and tested by the Tobacco Control Unit:
(1) the “Online Training Program in Brief Intervention to Quit Smoking” designed by the Catalan Institute of Oncology which offers training on evidence-based behavioral and pharmacological interventions to quit smoking;
(2) the “Implementation Tools” developed in the ISCI_SEC project and based on the Ottawa model tools (leaflets, pocket guide, posters).
In addition, the project will update the online course by incorporating five educational videos in which participants will view simulated scenarios in which they will learn how to: 1) provide strategic counseling 2) assess smokers’ motivation and nicotine dependence; 3) offer smoking cessation medications and address clients’ questions and concerns in therapy; 4) motivate a patient not interested in quitting smoking; and, 5) support a patient who has relapsed.
By training health professionals on how to provide help to quit smoking, we aim to increase smoking cessation interventions in clinical settings.
