Monitoring a cohort of nursing students in Catalonia
Nurses can make a significant difference in reducing tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. However, their tobacco consumption and level of knowledge have a significant impact on their daily clinical practice. During 2015-16, the ECTEC study (Study on Tobacco Consumption in Nursing Students in Catalonia) was carried out to analyze the prevalence of consumption in this group. At present, it is unknown what changes may have occurred in the variables studied. For this reason, the following objective is proposed.
To evaluate changes in the consumption of tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and cannabis, in the level of knowledge and interventions to quit smoking, attitude towards smoking and training received in a cohort of nursing students (participation year 2015-16).
Cohort study (follow-up of participants in the ECTEC study). The subjects of the study are all participants in the study, composed of students of the Nursing Degree from the 15 University Schools of Nursing in Catalonia during the 2015-2016 academic year who have accessible emails at the time of contact (n= 3,709). A structured online questionnaire will be used in which the following will be analyzed: the consumption of tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and cannabis, knowledge about smoking, attitude towards smoking as a health problem and training received during the nursing degree. The relationship between the variables studied and their 95% confidence interval will be studied. Changes in consumption between the baseline survey (2015-16) and the follow-up (2018) and their determinants will be studied using Cox proportional hazards models.
