Validation of PROMIS irritability items in patients initiating smoking cessation
Irritability has been identified as one of the important symptoms in individuals who quit smoking, with a prevalence of 80% among patients who initiate specific treatment to quit smoking (Fagerström, 2002; Hughes & Hatsukami, 1986). It has been observed that in these patients, 48 hours after the last cigarette smoked, there is a clear peak of irritability that decreases in intensity from that moment on (Ward, Swan, & Jack, 2001). Furthermore, it has been observed, in previous studies, that the increase in irritability during the smoking cessation process is a predictor of relapse (Patterson, Kerrin, Wileyto, & Lerman, 2008).
The objective of the project is the calibration and validation in Spain of the PROMIS item banks related to mental health that assess 3 different health domains: the PROMIS item banks of depression, anxiety and irritability/anger, in clinical samples of patients and in a sample of the general population.
Observational follow-up study with 3 assessments (baseline, 7 days and 2 months) in patients starting treatment to quit smoking.
The PROMIS score of the three scales (Irritability, Depression and Anxiety) will be calculated, at baseline and at follow-up. Convergent-discriminant validity will be studied using Multitrait-Multimethod Matrix (MTMM) analysis of correlations with related measures (MNWS and STAXI-2 irritability) and less related constructs (depression and anxiety). An assessment of the validity of known groups and the sensitivity of the instruments to change at follow-up will also be performed. The significance and magnitude of changes in patients’ scores during follow-up will be assessed using ANCOVA and repeated measures ANOVA.
Until June 2018.
The study is funded by the FIS grant.
