Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tobacco Control, Head of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program, and Head of the Tobacco Control Unit at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO). He is also Coordinator of the Epidemiology and Public Health Program at IDIBELL and Full Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona.
PROJECTS
He earned his medical degree from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 1990. From 1990 to 1994, he was a predoctoral researcher at the Clinical and Molecular Cancer Epidemiology Research Unit (IMIM). He completed a Master’s in Public Health and obtained his PhD from UAB in 1995. He then undertook a postdoctoral fellowship (1994–1995) at the Laboratory of General Epidemiology at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan.
His research has focused on tobacco control, from the characterization of the epidemic to the study of its various determinants (social, price, advertising, industry, etc.) and how to implement preventive and control measures. Similarly, his studies include exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, the use of electronic cigarettes and new tobacco and nicotine products, as well as exposure to aerosols from electronic cigarettes. He is also interested in implementation research in cancer, the teaching of epidemiological methods and scientific writing. He has written more than 400 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has been director (2004 to 2010) of the journal Gaceta Sanitaria , Vice-President (2013-14) and President (2015-16) of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology and Academic Director of the School of Public Health of Menorca (2016-2021). He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the magazine Tobacco Control and since December 2023 he has been the President of the Tobacco Advisory Council of Catalonia.
