Indonesia, the second-largest cigarette market in the world, has yet to put in place policies to prevent youths from taking up vaping amidst the public outcry over the “epidemic” of teen vaping and the surge of vaping-related illness in the United States. Moreover, the sale of e-cigarettes in Indonesia might increase the number of young people who smoke, as vaping among non-smoking youth can be a gateway of tobacco smoking.
Thus, the Indonesian government should take immediate action to protect the youth. The policy recommendations that the government should adopt consist of safety and quality standards for e-cigarettes, restriction of e-cigarette products access for youth and non-smokers, the vaping ban in smoke-free areas, and public education campaign about the harms of exposure to e-cigarettes. –by Beladenta Amalia
