Cornellà Health Survey Follow-up Study
In Spain, there are cohorts formed with volunteers, such as the MONICA project on cardiovascular risk factors, the EPIC study on diet and cancer or the SUN study on diet and other risk factors. In our country, several Health Surveys have been carried out at a national, regional or local level, but there is no tradition of studies monitoring mortality and/or incidence experienced in these representative samples of the general population, who were interviewed personally, and from whom information was obtained not only on their health status and lifestyles but also on comorbidity and use of health services.
To analyze changes in tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption and physical activity between 1994 (baseline interview) and 2002 (follow-up interview). Secondly, the project will allow obtaining cross-sectional information on other psychosocial factors (perception of risk, locus of control, social support) related to health and to investigate methodological aspects related to cohort studies.
Design: Prospective cohort study of a representative sample of the general population. Study area: General non-institutionalized population of Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona). Study subjects: 1,237 men and 1,263 women interviewed personally during 1994 in Cornellà. Procedures: The follow-up of the cohort and the obtaining of new information on lifestyles and occurrence of diseases will be carried out by personal telephone interview during 2002. The follow-up questionnaire is based on the one used in the baseline interview. The feasibility of its use must be verified in a convenience sample and during the pilot test. The determinants related to changes in lifestyles and the relative risk of suffering the different diseases studied will be analyzed using Cox and logistic regression models.
