European Regulatory Science on Tobacco – Exchange of research and innovation personnel (EUREST-RISE)
Smoking and other forms of tobacco use are considered the leading cause of preventable morbidity and premature mortality worldwide. The design and additives of tobacco products provide the industry with a primary tool for innovations that can undermine public health programs and support tobacco use and dependence. In recent years, many new technologies and cigarette design features have been developed and adopted, such as new tobacco blends, filters, venting, and additives, including flavors. Within this evolutionary process, new tobacco products have emerged, such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, further perpetuating the complexity of understanding and, subsequently, effectively regulating the products.
Within EUREST-RISE, an integrated series of research studies is proposed to facilitate the training of researchers in examining tobacco product systems, their mechanisms and purposes, as well as the interactions between key design features and their evaluation in user populations.
The project proposes to achieve its objective through 5 specific work packages:
Coordination and development of the collaborative network.
Use of data in Tobacco Control: analysis at product and population level.
Training and transfer of knowledge on chemical and sensory research of tobacco products, heated tobacco and electronic cigarettes.
Training in advocacy, political integration and communication for tobacco control.
Diffusion and communication.
Ethical requirements.
