Researchers from the Tobacco Control Unit of the Catalan Institute of Oncology-University of Barcelona have published results on the determinants of follow-up of a cohort of nursing students from Catalonia in the Journal of Professional Nursing. Of the 4,381 participants in the baseline study conducted in the 2015-2016 academic year, 25% (1,097) participated in the follow-up three years later (2018-2019). In the baseline study, students were contacted in person at their training centers where team members invited them to participate in a paper questionnaire. All initial study participants, who provided their email addresses and agreed to be recontacted, were sent an invitation to participate in the online follow-up survey. The study shows how some determinants influenced participation, observing that men, students ≥24 years
of age, and smokers participated less in the follow-up. The article suggests different strategies that can increase participation in online surveys such as the use of reminders, incentives, and communication channels adapted to the target participants.
