Protocol published for nursing indication of varenicline and cytisine to help quit smoking

The Department of Health has implemented a new protocol for the application of the “Guide for the indication, use and authorization of the dispensing of medicines subject to medical prescription by nurses: smoking cessation”, validated by the Ministry of Health last April.

The protocol includes the indication of varenicline and cytisine, two medications used in the smoking cessation process. A major advance in healthcare, giving nurses greater autonomy to offer proactive support to people who want to quit smoking.

Both drugs are indicated for people who consume tobacco or nicotine products, with a high dependence on this substance. These drugs have been shown to be effective in combination with educational interventions and behavioral support, doubling the chances of success in quitting.

Conditions for treatment

To access this treatment, patients must meet the following requirements:

  • Smoking at least 10 cigarettes a day and having a high dependence on nicotine.
  • Show motivation to quit smoking, with at least one previous attempt in the last year.
  • Participate in an individual or group support program for quitting smoking.

With this initiative, Catalonia reaffirms its commitment to promoting public health and controlling smoking, facilitating access to effective treatments and reinforcing the key role of nurses in the healthcare system.
