3Cat’s La Marató Funds “Smoke-Free Homes” Project to Protect Children’s Respiratory Health

The funds raised in the latest edition of La Marató de 3Cat will support a project led by the Tobacco Control Unit of ICO-IDIBELL and IDIAP Jordi Gol, aimed at protecting children’s respiratory health.

The project, titled “Smoke-Free Homes: Effectiveness and Implementation of an Intervention in Primary Care Pediatric Services to Improve Children’s Respiratory Health,” is coordinated by Dr. Marcela Fu (ICO-IDIBELL) and Dr. Pere Toran Montserrat (IDIAP Jordi Gol). Dr. Marcela Fu (ICO-IDIBELL) and by Dr. Pere Toran Montserrat (IDIAP Jordi Gol).

With funding of €299,982, the initiative’s primary goal is to promote smoke-free environments in homes where children live. To achieve this, an evidence-based intervention will be implemented and offered to families living in households where smoking occurs, through primary care pediatric services at various centers across Catalonia. The study will involve two groups of households: those with children who have respiratory problems and those without.

Exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) remains a major public health concern, causing several serious illnesses, including respiratory diseases in children. Although tobacco consumption and exposure to smoke in public spaces have decreased thanks to anti-smoking regulations, exposure to SHS in private settings such as homes continues to be common and poses a significant challenge for public health in Catalonia.

This project aims to reduce the harmful impact of environmental tobacco smoke on children’s health and strengthen preventive measures within the family environment.
