New PhD in the unit: Olena Tigova defends her thesis on smoke-free homes

Olena Tigova, a researcher at the Tobacco Control Unit, defended her doctoral thesis on February 3 at the University of Barcelona’s Bellvitge Campus. Her dissertation, titled “Prevalence and prevention of smoking and second-hand smoke exposure in private homes,” received an excellent grade.

Her research examined how common smoking and second-hand smoke exposure are in households and the factors associated with them. The work also involved adapting and piloting an intervention designed to support families with children in creating smoke-free homes.

The thesis was supervised by Esteve Fernández, Secretary of Public Health at the Department of Health and former head of the Tobacco Control Unit, and by Cristina Martínez, the unit’s current head. The examining committee included Dr. Ernest Nadal, la Dr. Montse Ballbe i la Dr. Ariadna Feliu.

This contribution strengthens the Tobacco Control Unit’s track record in applied research and its commitment to generating evidence that supports healthier, smoke-free environments.
