Kick-Off Meeting for the “Smoke-Free Homes” Project, Funded by La Marató de 3Cat 2024

The “Smoke-Free Homes” project, financed with funds raised in the 2024 edition of the 3Cat Marathon for Respiratory Diseases , officially began its activity this Monday, May 11, with the celebration of the inaugural meeting.

The session was held at the facilities of the Jordi Gol Primary Care Research Institute (IDIAP Jordi Gol) and was attended by representatives of the Tobacco Control Unit of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) – Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) , as well as IDIAP Jordi Gol, the institutions driving the project. It was also attended by pediatric professionals from primary care in Catalonia, who will play a key role in the implementation of the initiative.

The project is led by the Dr. Marcela Fu (ICO-IDIBELL) and Dr. Pere Toran Montserrat (IDIAP Jordi Gol) and has as its main objective to promote smoke-free domestic environments , specifically in those homes where children live. To achieve this goal, an evidence-based intervention will be implemented aimed at families where smoking is present at home, through the pediatric services of several primary care centers in the territory. The study will be developed with two different groups: homes with children with respiratory problems and homes with children without these conditions.

The inaugural meeting served to formally introduce the research team, review the conceptual framework, objectives and methodology of the project, as well as to establish the first lines of work and coordinate the tasks between the participating teams.

Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a major public health problem that causes several serious diseases, including respiratory diseases in children. This initiative aims to contribute to reducing children’s exposure to ETS and strengthen prevention strategies within the family, promoting healthy habits and safer environments for children’s health.
