The Tobacco Control Unit (UCT) of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) has participated in the 10th edition of the European Conference on Tobacco or Health (ECToH) , held in Milan (Italy) from 20 to 22 May 2026. This is one of the main European scientific meetings in the field of tobacco prevention and control, which has brought together professionals and researchers from all over Europe to share recent evidence and experiences in public health.
Contributions of the Tobacco Control Unit
En aquest context, l’equip de la UCT ha presentat un total de cinc comunicacions orals i quatre pòsters científics. Les seves contribucions han abordat temes com l’exposició al fum del tabac en espais privats amb presència d’infants, les iniciatives per promoure llars sense fum, els determinants socials associats a la cessació tabàquica a Europa i la interferència de la indústria del tabac en les polítiques públiques. També es va donar a conèixer la feina que lidera l’ICO dins de la Joint Action SAFE, així com altres estudis en curs a la unitat, presentats en format pòster.
The new edition of the Tobacco Control Scale (TCS 2025) was also presented during the congress, which analyses the degree of implementation of tobacco control policies in European countries. The ICO UCT has contributed to the preparation of this report and has been responsible for the design of the new TCS website , aimed at facilitating access to data and comparison between countries.
Participation in the ECToH has also served to strengthen networking, with meetings with members of the Joint Action SAFE —which the unit has recently joined— and with other teams with whom it shares international research projects.
The presence of the UCT at the congress has contributed to giving visibility to its research activity and strengthening collaborations, in a key space for moving towards more effective tobacco control policies and improving the health of the population.
