Introduction: Nurses can exert a significant change in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with smoking. However, their consumption of tobacco and their level of knowledge has an important impact on their daily clinical practice. During the year 2015-16, the ECTEC study (Study of Tobacco Consumption in Nursing Students of the Universities of Catalonia) was carried out to analyze the prevalence of consumption in this group. Currently, the changes that may have occurred in the studied variables are unknown. For this reason, the following objective is considered.
Aim: To evaluate the changes in the consumption of tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, and cannabis, the level of knowledge and interventions for quitting smoking, attitude towards smoking, and training received in a cohort of nursing students (year of participation 2015- 16)
Methods: A cohort study (follow-up of participants in the ECTEC study). The subjects of the study are all the participants of the initial study, composed of students of the Nursing Degree of the 15 Nursing Schools of Catalonia during the 2015-2016 course that have emails accessible at the time of contact (n = 3,440). An online structured questionnaire will be used which will analyze: consumption of tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, and cannabis, knowledge about smoking, attitude towards smoking as a health problem, and training received during the nursing degree. The relationship between the variables studied and their confidence interval to 95% will be studied. The changes in consumption between the baseline survey (2015-16) and the follow-up (2018) and its determinants will be studied through Cox proportional risk models.
