On November 26, the Department of Health hosted a meeting for the “Smoke-Free Homes” project, attended by the project working group and Catalonia’s Secretary of Public Health, Prof. Esteve Fernández, the project’s principal investigator.
Following the adaptation of the intervention to the Catalan context and the completion of a pilot study, the main trial began in 2024. It involves families with smokers and children who currently allow smoking at home. The goal is to encourage these families not to smoke indoors, creating smoke-free, healthier homes.
The project is open to all Parents’ Associations (AFAs) in Catalonia, which can offer the program to families at their schools. Currently, around 200 families from more than 70 AFAs are participating, with a target of 400 families.
The meeting also focused on defining strategies for the final phase of the project, particularly recruiting additional families. Preliminary results were shared, and discussions addressed sustainability and the potential continuation of the project beyond its current timeline.
The “Smoke-Free Homes” project is scheduled to conclude in June 2026, with the aim of fostering healthy, smoke-free living environments across Catalonia.
